The Giant Panda

Artist: Kristen Cumings

The giant panda is one of the most beloved animals in the world. They are identified by their distinctive black and white colouring and their protruding wrist bone that acts like a thumb which helps them hold bamboo while they munch on it with their strong molar teeth. These precious animals are threatened by restriction and degradation of their habitat and reliance on bamboo for food. Panda populations are small and isolated and limited to a few isolated mountain ranges in south-central China. Another reason for their dwindling numbers is that female pandas are only able to become pregnant for 2-3 days each spring, which is a small window of time to keep a population alive.

Tribute to the Golden State Grizzly

Artist: Kristen Cumings

The Grizzly Bear adorns the California State Flag and is the inspiration for University of California Golden Bears. The majestic creature known for its strength and speed is an enduring symbol of the State's earliest days when settlers and bears shared the wilderness.

American Bald Eagle

Artist: Peter Rocha

The Bald Eagle is the bird of prey most recognisable as the national symbol of the US. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States and northern Mexico. The Bald Eagle is a large bird, with a wingspan of up to 234 centimetres. Although recently thought to be on the brink of extinction in the US, it now has a stable population. Nevertheless it remains a protected and highly revered species in the United States, and to wilfully and fatally shoot or harm a Bald Eagle is a federal offense which can potentially result in several years in jail.

The Great Green Macau

Artist: Kristen Cummings

The Great Green Macaw are one of the largest species of parrots and they are found in Central and South America. They are an endangered species, and are now under global wild life protection. Although sometimes bred in captivity because they have a less nervous personality than most other macaws, they are nevertheless, still very rarely seen as a pet.

The Hawksbill Sea Turtle

Artist: Kristen Cummings

The hawksbill sea turtle is a critically endangered sea turtle. Although it has a worldwide distribution in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans human fishing practices have threatened the Hawksbill with extinction. Their shells were the primary source of tortoiseshell material used for decorative purposes. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species has now outlawed the capture and trade of hawksbill sea turtles and products derived from them.

The Rockhopper Penguin

Artist: Kristen Cummings

The Rockhopper Penguin lives in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as around the southern coasts of South America. They can live to a very long time – and one named Rocky was 29 years and 4 months when he died in Norway in October 2003. A recent study has shown that the Rockhopper Penguin population lost over one million birds from the breeding colonies on the islands of Tristan da Cunha and Gough over 45 years. It is thought that the penguin may be suffering increased levels of predation, as well as competition for food, from the rapidly rising population of Subantarctic Fur Seals. Other factors may include increasing disturbance and pollution, introduced predators, reduced food supplies due to overfishing, and climate change.
